In the past few years I have been lucky enough to work in the early stages of building software driven companies. I have experienced firsthand the challenges and opportunities of working in this dynamic and hands-on environment. I am comfortable with the fast paced culture and making key decisions that will affect the company’s future, as well as the need to take on a wide variety of tasks in the name of building something amazing.
Every software development project has it’s own unique challenges, and some more than others. I have worked with a variety of products that required special attention to be paid to compliance. This includes FDA, HIPPA and other strict governing entities when building software in the realms of disease diagnosis, health care providing, and medical sales.
I spent 8 years in the world of advertising and creative agencies where a key part of most mobile projects was to deliver new and creative features, interactions and experiences. I have worked with almost every iOS framework to discover and refine such ideas, eventually becoming Director of Innovation at the award winning Factory Labs. Looking forward, there are plenty of ripe opportunities with new iOS frameworks such as Augmented Reality, Image Analysis, Machine Learning and more that could be game changers in the cannabis industry.
10 years ago when the first iPhone came out I was tasked with helping some of my coworkers gain skills to become Objective-C developers. Since then I have continued to take on more leadership roles in development, leading small teams to develop high-profile projects, and helping my clients’ employees gain knowledge through code review and collaborative ideation.
I believe that UX is ultimately at the center of all software projects. Users don't differentiate between features, interactions and experiences - they just like the software or they don't. So my personal approach is to empower the UX and visual design teams with knowledge and information from the programming world. UI control options, interface guidelines, trends and best practices from the perspective of an informed engineer can lend true value to the UX design process. Likewise, the specialized knowledge of creative and graphic designers can inform development in a variety of ways regarding addictive interactions and delightful experiences, while delivering measurable business results.
I’ve been building high profile apps since the first iPhone came out. But my experience doesn’t stop there. Over the years I’ve worked closely with and am proficient in many languages and technologies including Java, C#, PHP, C, JS and more. I’ve also worked in building desktop apps, server-side applications and even embedded microcontroller coding. While my focus and specialty is definitely iOS, it can never hurt to understand the whole stack!
Growing up in Colorado, I’m excited to live in a place that is forward thinking, innovative and taking a leadership position in the nation and world. The cannabis industry perfectly reflects these values, and clearly offers a fascinating and challenging road ahead. I’m excited at the very idea of working within this industry, and bringing great innovation and business growth to Flowhub.
